Peter Pickering - Words and Worlds Interwoven

"Standing with You" by Guy Sebastian is a heartfelt song that emphasises support and solidarity. The lyrics convey a message of being there for someone who is going through a difficult time. Guy Sebastian sings about understanding the pain of others and offering a shoulder to lean on, reinforcing the idea that no one has to face their struggles alone. The song highlights the importance of compassion, empathy, and unwavering support for loved ones during their toughest moments.

In my life, much like the lyrics of "Standing with You" by Guy Sebastian, I navigated a path filled with struggles and challenges, but without the vital support and understanding that might have made a difference. The song speaks of solidarity, compassion, and being there for someone during tough times—elements that were missing in my journey.

For many years, I didn't know I had issues that required attention. Unbeknownst to me, I was grappling with neurodiversity, which, for me, includes NPD, ADHD, bipolar disorder, and borderline autism. Without this crucial knowledge, I bore the weight of my struggles alone, often alienating those around me. The burden was heavy, and I inadvertently pushed many people away, unable to articulate or even understand why I was different.

Few stood by me through the tumultuous periods. Those who did often did so without fully comprehending the depth of my internal battles. I don't blame anyone for this. How could they have known what I didn't even understand myself? The isolation was profound, and the lack of support intensified my sense of alienation.

Looking back, I realise how different my life might have been if I had known about my neurodiversity earlier. Perhaps it would have smoothed the wrinkles of life, providing me with strategies to cope better, and allowing me to foster more meaningful relationships. The compassion and empathy highlighted in Guy Sebastian's song could have been a balm to my weary soul.

Despite the past, I now embrace my journey with acceptance and understanding. The years ahead may be fewer, but they are filled with a newfound sense of peace. Knowing my neurodiversity has not only helped me make sense of my life but also allowed me to connect with others who walk a similar path. This journey, though fraught with challenges, has led me to a place of self-acceptance and gratitude for the support I now find in unexpected places.

Standing With you

The more I tell you you can do this
The more you tell yourself you're useless
Any advice right now is fruitless
You're somewhere only you can go
I won't pretend to know, so

Instead of telling you you'll be alright
I'm just gon' be that someone by your side
Yeah let me be that distant satellite
A constant in the sky

'Cause I'm standing with you tonight
Yeah I will be that voice in your ear
Quietly destroying your fear
You won't even know that I'm here
But I'm standing with you tonight
Oh I will be the pill for your pain
Until the clouds have run out of rain
Close enough but just out of sight
I'm standing with you tonight

Your head is full and yet it's hollow
Don't even think about tomorrow
So if you let me I will follow
Oh if you're gonna go
At least you're gonna know

Instead of telling you you'll be alright
I'm just gon' be that someone by your side
Oh let me be that distant satellite
A constant in the sky

I'm standing with you tonight
Yeah I will be that voice in your ear
Quietly destroying your fear
You won't even know that I'm here
But I'm standing with you tonight
Oh I will be the pill for your pain
Until the clouds have run out of rain
Close enough but just out of sight
I'm standing with you

I know I may not say the right thing
Let me tell you one thing
Yeah 'cause there is one thing
You're wrong about
This world would not be a better place
I don't wanna lose you now

Yeah I will be that voice in your ear
Quietly destroying your fear
Oh you won't even know that I'm here
I'm standing with you tonight
Oh I will be the pill for your pain
Until the clouds have run out of rain
Close enough but just out of sight
I'm standing with you tonight
Oh
